So, you're Pi-curious... but totally overwhelmed on where and how to start your Pilates journey. That is understandable!! With so much mixed information out there and soo many choices, it's gotta be hard to know who to trust with your health and safety.
The explosion of "Pilates porn" on social media has given the world a very skewed idea of what real Pilates is and is NOT.
Pilates Porn
(pi-la-teez pawrn)
noun
my cheeky nickname for those videos all over TikTok and the Gram where people flaunt their 'flawlessly' sculpted physiques, barely covered by the latest matching workout ensembles—oh, and you can snag those too if you hit up the link in their bio and use their influencer code. They're busy showing off moves on reformers that look like a Cirque du Soleil audition, all while pushing myths like, "only skinny, bendy ballerinas can do Pilates" and "Pilates is just a pastime for wealthy, privileged white ladies." Spoiler alert: that's about as far from the TRUTH as me becoming a nuclear physicist.
A true, connected Pilates practice is an essential component of a vibrant, healthy, and pain-free life for anyone and everyone. This system of exercises is both preventative and restorative. Connected Pilates doesn’t need to look like a fancy Instagram post, which is perfect for those of us who aren’t just here for cheap entertainment. Many posts feature individuals who are simply performing for the camera, often not engaging in actual Pilates but rather executing tricky, visually interesting movements on Pilates apparatus. Numerous corporate venues and big box gyms claim to offer "reformer Pilates," but in reality, it's just generic group fitness using Pilates equipment. They pack over 12 reformers into a space and churn out classes every hour, day in and day out, like a factory. YIKES.
So, what should a Pi-curious individual do, dive into the endless pie of numbers and wait for dessert?! Apologies, that was definitely a Dad joke.
